Google Tools – Google is much more than a search engine. It is a suite of free software and services that can enhance learning, engage students, and make the work of teachers easier. This series of podcasts demonstrates the usefulness and applications for some of Google’s most innovative products including custom search engines, Google earth, iGoogle, Google Calendar and Google Docs. Each podcast will consist of a screencast demonstrating the product in action and suggesting applications for use in the classroom.

iTunes U Highlight: Philosophy & Science of Human Nature at Yale

I have espoused the value of iTunes U many times. The open-source education repository publishes and distributes (at no cost to consumers) rigorous courses in science, the humanities, computers, and more (see my article – “15 Opportunities for Free Online Education“).

Today, I highlight the course offered via Yale by Professor Tamar Gendler (Professor of Philosophy and Cognitive Science, Chair of the Department of Philosophy at Yale) entitled: “Philosophy & Science of Human Nature.”

Course Description: Philosophy and the Science of Human Nature pairs central texts from Western philosophical tradition (including works by Plato, Aristotle, Epictetus, Hobbes, Kant, Mill, Rawls, and Nozick) with recent findings in cognitive science and related fields. The course is structured around three intertwined sets of topics: Happiness and Flourishing; Morality and Justice; and Political Legitimacy and Social Structures.”

Today I would like to highlight Open Yale Courses on iTunes U. iTunes U is a collection of academic resourcImagees for both secondary and post-secondary schools around the world. The Open Yale Courses includes introductory classes on subjects from philosophy to astronomy. All courses are free, downloadable, and playable on your Mac or PC via iTunes or on your iOS device.

iTunes U Highlight – The American Revolution at Yale

Today I’m highlighting the free open course at Yale University (made available via iTunes U), “The American Revolution.” The course is taught by Joanne B. Freeman, Professor in History at Yale.

The course description is as follows:

The American Revolution entailed some remarkable transformations — converting British colonists into American revolutionaries, and a cluster of colonies into a confederation of states with a common cause — but it was far more complex and enduring than the fighting of a war. As John Adams put it, “The Revolution was in the Minds of the people… before a drop of blood was drawn at Lexintgon” — and it continued long past America’s victory at Yorktown. This course will examine the Revolution from this broad perspective, tracing the participants’ shifting sense of themselves as British subjects, colonial settlers, revolutionaries, and Americans.

It’s an amazing course for those interested in the birth of America.

Open Course Yale – The Civil War & Reconstruction (iTunes U)

Yale offers a free course via iTunes U entitled “The Civil War & Reconstruction.” You can download the free podcast here. The following is the course description:

(HIST 119) This course explores the causes, course, and consequences of the American Civil War, from the 1840s to 1877. The primary goal of the course is to understand the multiple meanings of a transforming event in American history. Those meanings may be defined in many ways: national, sectional, racial, constitutional, individual, social, intellectual, or moral. Four broad themes are closely examined: the crisis of union and disunion in an expanding republic; slavery, race, and emancipation as national problem, personal experience, and social process; the experience of modern, total war for individuals and society; and the political and social challenges of Reconstruction

Peruvian Visitors Arrive in Droves to See Repatriated Incan Artifacts

After a lengthy, vitriolic, and expensive legal battle with Yale University, the artifacts removed from Machu Picchu by Yale Archaeologist Hiram Bingham are receiving the first of many indigenous visitors. For the next few months, the arifacts, currently on display at Peru’s government palace at Lima, has hosted more than 100,000 visits since the artifacts began their repatriation in March of this year. Ultimately, Yale has promised to return 366 artifacts confiscated by Hiram Bingham between 1911-1914.

Upon the completion of their repatriation, the artifacts will be moved to their permanent residence, the old Incan Capital at Cusco on April 20. The Peruvian Government has been actively renovating their museum at Cusco to house the more fragile items (such as human remains) in preparation for their return (which many have argued should have happened years ago).

Native Peruvians will be granted free admission indefinately to view the artifacts.
