Are Teachers Under or Over Paid? Four Studies Answer the Question… Kind Of

How well do we pay the teachers of our children? Are they over paid? Are they under paid? Do they work too hard? Do they get too much time off? Do those who ‘can’t do, teach?’ Four studies (by left and right leaning think-tanks alike) have reached four different conclusions based on the merits of teachers, the ‘work hours,’ and the education. However, there still seems to be no firm realization or agreement.

As a man who tries to vote with his feet, I did the teacher training all the way through the student teaching and was offered a job at the school where I did my student teaching. Turned it down because of the rate of pay I was offered. This was 1994, I was making 55 grand in a steelmill, the school offered 18.5. I retired from the steelmill three years ago. I do enjoy your blog and I have time to read it, I made the right choice. My thoughts are that teachers are way underpaid for what they have to do, my wife was a teacher and spent every summer in school until the year she retired. Twelve hour days for her were normal, I worked overtime in the mill as well but was paid for it in spades.
